West Chester Keeps To Winning Ways

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Marina Sharkey (Newtown Square, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) posted her first double-double of the year with 12 kills and 22 digs to lead West Chester to a 3-1 victory in its opening match of the East Stroudsburg Invitational Friday afternoon inside Koehler Fieldhouse.
 
West Chester (5-0) upped its season-opening winning streak to five straight with the 20-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-18 come-from-behind win. Southern New Hampshire dropped to 4-3 on the year.
 
Sharkey posted a season-best 12 kills to pace the Golden Rams attack. She also registered a career-high 22 digs in the win, marking the first time in her career that she eclipsed 20 digs in a match. Callie Krajcir (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) added 18 digs.
 
West Chester, which dropped the opening set, rebounded to capture the next three sets consecutively and win the match. The Penmen hit .161 in the opening set, but could not get above the .100 percentage in any of the next three sets. The Golden Rams finished with 11 team blocks and held their opponent below a .100 hitting percentage for the fourth straight match. Only Notre Dame in the season opener has hit over .100 (.106).
 
Brynne Taylor (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) recorded nine kills and eight digs while Victoria Cruciani (Phoenixville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) posted five blocks to go along with six kills. Samantha Agostini (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) registered eight kills and four blocks as well. Cara Reese's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) six blocks paced the Golden Rams in that category.
 
Annalee Halbert (Port Murray, N.J./West Morris Central) and Macon Frey (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) each recorded 21 assists in the win as well.
 
West Chester takes on Barry University at 7 p.m. in its final match of the day. The East Stroudsburg Invitational will resume on Sunday.
