Men’s Swimming Impressive In Day One Of Season Opener

WEST CHESTER, Pa.Victor Polyakov (Taganrog, Russia) won the 400-yard individual medley and was a part of three relays that all took first place to help West Chester's men's swimming & diving team open up a big lead after day one of its season-opening tri-meet at Graham Natatorium Friday evening.
 
West Chester, Southern Connecticut State and Shippensburg are all in the pool this weekend, lifting the lid on the 2015-16 campaign. The Golden Rams are way out in front of both the Owls and Raiders heading into tomorrow's final day. West Chester has 138-45 lead on So. Conn. State and a 148-33 lead on Shippensburg.
 
Polyakov touched the wall in 4 minutes, 9.19 seconds in the 400 IM to take first. He then took part in the 200 medley relay, and both the 200 and 800 freestyle relays, to help those relays take first.
 
Luke Maguire (Conshohocken, Pa./LaSalle) posted a time of 51.92 seconds in the 100 butterfly to win that event while also being part of the 200 medley relay that won. Meanwhile Michael Oliver (Howell, N.J./Freehold Twp.) won the 100 breaststroke and played a role in the 800 free relay that won.
 
West Chester's men captured first place in nine of the 10 events Friday.
 
Daniil Sokman (Russia) won the 100 backstroke in 54.18 and helped the 200 free relay to a win. Connor Forlini (Warminster, Pa./William Tennett)  won the 500 free in 4:48.55. Tim Cengia (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) won the 1-meter diving event with a 278.33 score.
 
Oliver, Philip Nawn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) and Thomas McCormick (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) rounded out a sweep of the top four spots in the 400 IM for the Golden Rams. WCU head coach Jamie Rudisill praised freshman Nawn and his effort so early in the season in that event.
 
Forlini finished right behind Oliver in the 100 breast with a time of 1:01.23. Meanwhile Dan Roy (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) (272.18)and Jonas Ricci (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) (268.28) were second and third, respectively, off the 1-meter board in support of Cengia's winning score.
 
West Chester had relay teams claim both first and second place in both the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay.
 
Day two of the season-opening tri-meet is set for Saturday morning.
