West Chester Erases 26-Point Deficit Against Gwynedd Mercy

West Chester, Pa. – Sr., F Matt Wiseley (Emmaus, Pa. / Emmaus) registered his first double-double of the 2015-16 season and contributed with a much needed block with .7 seconds left in the game to help West Chester complete a 26-point comeback victory over Division III Power Gwynedd Mercy Griffins by a score of 94-93 inside Hollinger Fieldhouse Saturday evening.

A last second heave by Griffin guard Darell Artis bounced off the back of the rim and secured the victory, allowing the fans inside Hollinger to breathe a little easier with the clock showing all zeros.

The Golden Rams (1-0)  found themselves down 64-38 with 16:50 left to play and delivered through the foulvine to secure their first win of the season. Gwynedd Mercy (0-1) began the game shooting 61-percent in the first half, but then was limited to 32-percent shooting with only one 3-pointer out of 11 total in the second half.

Wiseley scored 16 points from over 50-perent shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds in the victory. Sr., G Mike Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa. / Martin Luther King) poured in a career-high 22 points on 57.1 % shooting from the field, to go with two rebounds and assists in the game.

Three freshman impressed in their debut and all scored in double-figures in first college game of their careers. Guard Malik Jackson (Lansdowne, Pa. / Penn Wood) registered a team-high 37 minutes, finishing off with 14 points (6-for-14), to go with five assists, four rebounds, and four steals. Teammate Matt Penecale (Jenkintown, Pa. / Abington) recorded 12 points (5-for-10), six rebounds, four assists, and three steals in the win. 6'5 forward Jackson Hyland (Avondale, Pa. / Kennet) also added 12 points, going 4-for-5 from downtown. Overall, the three rookies combined for 38 points, shooting 15-for-29 on the floor.

Jackson drove the full length of the court, blasting through four defenders enroot for two points to bring them within one with 6:45 remaining. Then Wisely a minute later picked up a rebound and completed score with a reverse layup to give the Golden Rams a 84-83 for over 25 minutes. Fr., Mike Jolaoso (Philadelphia, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) added on for his first two points in a Golden Rams uniform as they went up by three.

WCU had a 11-6 lead in the early stages of the first half and would turn into a one-point game 26-25, which would remain for three consecutive minutes until under 11 minutes to go in the first half. The Griffins would go on a 28-9 run to close out the half forcing the Golden Rams into 11 fouls and six turnovers throughout that stretch to lead by 20 going into the break (55-35).

First team All-CSAC guard Artis ended with a game-high 24 points, going 7-for-14 from the field and 8-for-9 at the free-throw line for the Griffins. Forward Cedric Elleby register 19 points, while Julian Hyden scored 15 points, to go with his team-leading nine rebounds, three blocks and three steals on the night.

D-I transfer Aaron Morgan scored 12 points in his Griffins debut. Tre Moore rounded out with 11 points in the loss.

West Chester will take that momentum into opening night of conference play as they take on the Lock Haven Bald Eagles inside Hollinger Fieldhouse on Wednesday Nov. 19th at 7:30 p.m.
