Box Score 2 WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester's softball team was on their A-game today as the Golden Rams out-scored the Shippensburg Red Raiders, 13-2, to sweep the doubleheader by scores of 6-0 in game one and 7-2 in game 2 on a sunny Saturday afternoon on South Campus.
The Golden Rams (26-10, 10-4 PSAC East) got a huge boost from their pitching staff to keep the Red Raiders off balance in order to close out the two games.
Shippensburg (10-11, 5-9), after being held scoreless in the first game, came out putting pressure on West Chester's starting pitcher in game two and grabbing an early 1-0 lead in the second. However, the Raiders would fall, after leaving a combined 17 runners on base, including the bases loaded three times throughout the two.
Game one starter,
Amanda Houck (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) (11-3) set the tone with a shutout for her 11th win of the season, giving up only eight hits, two walks and striking out four en route her third-straight shutout and fifth on the season.
Then, Junior
Katie Erb (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) got the nod to start game two and pitched very well in her 4 1/3 innings, allowing only one run in the second inning and two walks, while striking out three. Houck came back in for 2 2/3 innings and struck out four again, including three to send the Red Raiders lineup down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to complete the sweep of Shippensburg.
Sarah Walasavage (Minersville, Pa./Minersville) went a combined 4-for-7 with a double and three runs scored, to go with a walk and a stolen base.
Micaela McSpadden (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) would provide the spark in the lineup by hitting a RBI-double to deep-center field to score Walasavage and put the Golden Rams on the board the bottom of the first of game one. She would also go 4-for-7 in the twinbill, scoring two runs and knocking in two RBIs on two doubles.
Sarah Derstine (Telford, Pa./Souderton) added to the fray with a 2-for-4 stretch in game one, knocking in half of the Golden Rams total runs with three RBI.
Laura Altenburger (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) was the one who launched the big hit of the day with a two-out grand slam into the left-center field grass to give West Chester a six-run lead that would end the run for the Red Raiders. Altenburger went 3-for-6 with five RBI, all in game two.
Shippensburgs' Taylor Pattillo went a combined 4-for-7 with a 3-for-3 line in game one. Anna Warfield went 1-for-2 in game two and knocked in a run.
West Chester will be right back on the field tomorrow as they welcome in PSAC East rival Lock Haven for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on South Campus.
