Pair Of Walk-Off Wins Leads To Sweep Over Millersville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Erin Whitman provided the heroics in game one with a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning, and Sarah Derstine's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh of game two was what the doctor ordered, as West Chester swept a PSAC East softball doubleheader from visiting Millersville in dramatic fashion Monday.

West Chester (29-11, 13-5 PSAC East) took game one 4-1 in 10 frames and recovered for a 3-2 victory in the nightcap over Millersville (15-19, 7-12).

Ali Vavala hit a one-out double to get things started in the bottom of the sevneth inning of game two. Sarah Walasavage followed with a walk, before Derstine then doubled home Vavala with the winning run. It was a pair of run-scoring singles in the bottom of the sixth that erased a two-run deficit and knotted things up in the first place. Laura Altenburger singled home Derstine, and Erin Quense then knocked in Whitman. Both runs were unearned.

Katie Erb (6-0) went the distance inside the circle for the win in the nightcap. She allowed two runs on five hits and struck out three. She did not walk a batter.

In the opener, Vavala was placed on second base per international tie-breaking rules, and Walasavage bunted her over to third. Derstine was then hit by a pitch, which set the stage for Whitman's blast over the right-field fence, her fifth of the season.

Madison Kelly's RBI single in the fourth scored pinch-runner Shannon Gray for the game's first run. Altenburger was thrown out at the plate trying to score as well. Amanda Houck (13-4) threw all 10 innings to pick up the win. She allowed one run on six hits while striking out three. She did not walk a batter either.

West Chester travels to Mansfield on Tuesday for another PSAC East doubleheader - their fourth in as many days.
