CLARION, Pa. – West Chester University landed seven football players the 2015
Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Super Region 1 squad it was announced Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Andrew Cohen (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) was the lone Golden Rams gridder to earn first team accolades. Second team honorees included tight end
Tim Brown (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby), offensive linemen Doug Gilbert (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) and Tyler Drob (Cherry Hill, Pa./Cherry Hill East) and defensive back Ted Patton (Wilmington, Del./McKean). Third team members were Josh Ganzelli (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) and Kevin Malone (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic).Cohen, already an All-America selection at defensive end by numerous organizations and publications, broke the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) all-time sacks record with 33.5. He registered 13.5 sacks this past fall to go along with 20 tackles for a loss. He finished second on the team with 57 tackles and was credited with 10 QB hurries. He was a finalist for both the Gene Upshaw Award and the Cliff Harris Award as well. Cohen is making his second appearance on the
Don Hansen FB Gazette All Super Region 1 team, following his selection to the third team last fall (2014). Cohen was recently named the PSAC defensive player of the year while taking home first team plaudits. He was also a first team All-ECAC selection as well. The Holland, Pa., native was also named second team Little AP All-America in late December. Cohen appeared on the D2CCA All Super Region 1 first team and the
Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area squad.
Â
Brown and Gilbert are also making repeat appearances on the Don Hansen FB Gazette All Super Region 1 team this fall. Brown, who was a first team pick a year ago, dropped to the second team as a result of playing in just seven games, following eligibility issues at the beginning of the season and then an ankle injury at the end of the campaign. He still led West Chester in receptions (33), yards (444) and receiving touchdowns (5), despite all the missed time. He averaged 13.5 yards per reception. Brown was an All-ECAC pick in 2015.
Â
Gilbert, who was a second team pick in 2014 as well, was a big reason that West Chester reached the conference championship. West Chester ranked sixth in the conference in both rushing offense and passing offense. Running backs Jarel Elder and Monk combined to rush for over 1,000 yards and the Rams scored 17 rushing TDs.
Â
Drob, making his first appearance on the All Super Region 1 team, was another main piece to the Golden Rams' puzzle along the offensive line. Both Drob and Gilbert were also named All-ECAC while Gilbert was a first team All Super Region 1 selection by the Commissioner's Conference Association (CCA) this past fall. Drob, Gilbert and Brown were all first team All-PSAC East picks as well.
Â
As was Ted Patton, who was honored on the second team of the Don Hansen FB Gazette All Super Region 1 team. He led West Chester with four interceptions and five more pass breakups. Patton tied for fourth in the PSAC in interceptions and tied for 15th in passes defensed (9). He had 24 total tackles, including two for a loss. Patton was also an All-ECAC selection this season.
Â
Ganzelli and Malone, both third team selections on defense, are making their initial appearances on the Don Hansen FB Gazette All Super Region 1 team. Ganzelli turned out a spectacular fall campaign, clogging the middle of the field and plugging holes while making life hard on opposing running backs. He ranked fifth on the team in tackles with 39. His 7.5 tackles for a loss was second only to Cohen, and he also registered a pair of sacks on the year. Malone, meanwhile, made things difficult on opposing quarterbacks. He registered 28 tackles, but more importantly, he intercepted two passes and broke up three others while also recovering one fumble at his safety position.
Â
Both Ganzelli and Malone seemingly were overshadowed by Cohen's exploits on defense. However, they did not go unnoticed by the conference coaches, or the regional voters, in the postseason. Ganzelli and Malone were each first team All-PSAC East performers for head coach Bill Zwaan's crew. Additionally, Malone was an All-ECAC selection this fall.
