Gymnasts Sweep Quad Meet To Improve To 6-0

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester defeated Division I Temple while also topping Ursinus and Centenary (La.) Friday to improve to 6-0 in the 2016 season.
 
The West Chester University gymnasts returned to action inside Sturzebecker HSC Friday evening following a 13-day layoff and did so in impressive fashion. West Chester's overall score of 190.875 topped Temple (189.575), Ursinus (186.925) and Centenary (177.900). The victory against Temple also marked the first time West Chester has defeated Temple in eight seasons under head coach Barbara Cordova.
 
Majesta Valentine (Wilmington, Del.) captured first place in the all-around with a combined score of 38.775 while also taking first place on the floor exercise with a score of 9.800. Valentine placed second on the balance beam with a score of 9.750, second on the vault with a score of 9.625, and tied for third on the uneven bars with teammate Meghan Brannon (Seminole, Fla.) with a score of 9.600.
 
As a team West Chester finished first on the floor exercise with a score of 48.425. Rachel Blair (Telford, Pa.) placed third on the floor with a 9.725.
 
West Chester finished first on the vault with a team score of 47.375.
 
The Golden Rams gymnasts placed three of the top four on the balance beam. Lindsay Knapp (Collegeville, PA) lead the way and won the beam with a score of 9.800. Valentine was runner-up with a 9.750. Selena Swanger (Gettysburg, Pa.) finished tied for fourth on the beam with a score of 9.700. Swanger also placed third in the all-around with a combined score of 38.075.
 
"One of the team goals the girls set prior to the season was to make sure they always had each others back," Cordova said. "Tonight the girls did a great job stepping up and putting forth a real team effort."
 
The West Chester gymnasts waste little time and meet up with the University of Pennsylvania and Centenary College at Penn this Sunday. The meet begins at noon.
