Gymnastics Ties School Record In Win Over Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The WCU gymnastics squad improved to 12-3 on the season with a 191.825 team score. The 191.825 tied the WCU school record set last season.
 
Junior Majesta Valentine (Wilmington, Del.) shattered the WCU all-around record, a mark she had previously set. Valentine compiled a 39.075 all-around total finishing first in all four events.
 
The Rams started the meet on the uneven bars and scored a 47.000. Leading WCU on the bars were Valentine (9.725) and Meghan Brannon (Seminole, Fla.) who scored a 9.625 and finished third among all gymnasts.
 
The squad then rotated to the vault, where the team had their best day of the year recording a 48.150. WCU took the top four spots on the apparatus. Valentine's 9.725 was the best amongst all gymnasts. Selena Swanger (Gettysburg, Pa.) finished second with a 9.675. Samantha Engle (Beaver Falls, Pa.) scored a 9.625 and finished third. Finishing fourth on the vault was Lindsey Mathis (Waldorf, Md.) with a 9.600.
 
The Rams were also solid in their third rotation of the day, scoring a 48.375 on the floor. WCU claimed the top four floor spots. Lindsay Knapp (Collegeville, Pa.) scored a 9.725 and finished second behind Valentine's 9.825. Emily Loughery (Telford, Pa.) recorded a 9.650 resulting in a third place finish. Swanger's 9.625 finished fourth on the floor.
 
In the final rotation of the day, the WCU gymnasts' 48.300 broke the school beam record. The Golden Rams occupied the top five spots on the apparatus. Valentine (9.800), Knapp (9.775), and Swanger (9.625) claimed the top three spots. Rose Wortman (Bellefonte, Pa.) and Cecelia Lorenzon (Windsor, Pa.) finished fourth and fifth, respectively with marks of 9.575 and 9.525.
 
West Chester heads to the Philadelphia Convention Center on Friday, February 26 for a 5 p.m. meet against Penn State University, West Virginia University, Temple University, and Southern Connecticut State University.
