West Chester Tops Kutztown, 3-1

WEST CHESTER, Pa.-The West Chester University women's volleyball team(17-5, 7-4 PSAC) hosted the Kutztown University Golden Bears(6-16, 1-9  PSAC) in an important PSAC Southeast match on Friday night inside the Sturzebecker Health Science Center. The Golden Rams went on to win in four sets (18-25, 25-10, 25-17, 25-19).
How it Happened:
  • Kutztown jumped out to an early 4-0 lead to start the first set and while the Golden Rams battled back to even the set multiple times (8-8, 13-13) it would not be enough as the Golden Bears captured the first set by a score of 25-18.
  • In the second set West Chester came out seeking to avenge the first set loss as they jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead early in the set forcing Kutztown to use an early timeout.  The Golden Rams continued their hot start coming out of the timeout as they quickly won 11 of the next 16 points to take a commanding 19-8 lead in the second set. West Chester would then win six of the next eight points to win the set 25-10.
  • In the third set it was a tight back and forth affair throughout held anything larger than a three point lead until West Chester took an 18-14 lead late in the set triggering another Kutztown timeout.  West Chester then won seven of the next ten points to win the third set 25-17 which also put West Chester in the driver's seat heading to the fourth set with a 2-1 lead.
  • The fourth set was tight throughout once again with both sides competing well West Chester held a slim lead for much of the way eventually taking a 20-15 lead late in the set. West Chester would use this five point advantage to take the fourth set by a score of 25-19 and win the match 3-1.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Sr. Karleigh Lutz (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) had a big day recording a match high 18 kills.
  • Jr. Jillian Grammer (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) had another great day as she provided a match high 47 assists to help facilitate the Golden Ram offensive attack.
  • Sr. Nicki Yates (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) turned in yet another strong performance with 26 digs and three aces setting match highs in both of these categories.
  • West Chester turned in a strong .214 hitting percentage while holding their guests to a hitting percentage of just .071.

West Chester continues its homestand  tomorrow afternoon when East Stroudsburg visits the Sturzebecker Health Science Center for a 1 pm start.
