Box Score

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Joe Sheeran (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning to help West Chester come from behind and defeat Wayne State, 5-3, in the team's second game of its spring break trip at the Russmatt Invitational Sunday evening at Lake Myrtle Park.

Sheeran hit a two-out, 0-2 pitch clear over the left field fence with two men on that gave West Chester (4-2) a 4-2 advantage and made a winner out of right-handed senior Eric Close (Berwyn, Pa./Haverford) (1-0). It was Wayne State senior righty Chris Horvath's 91st and last pitch of the ballgame. Horvath (2-1) pitched very well for the Warriors (6-5), giving up four runs on five hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Close, however, proved to be a little bit better Sunday night. He started the game on the hill for the Golden Rams and lasted seven innings, scattering eight hits and surrendering only single tallies in the fourth and fifth frames. Joe Kinee (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) came on in relief and went the rest of the way for his first save of the season. He left the tying runs on base in the bottom of the ninth, catching the final batter of the game looking at strike three. Kinee yielded one run on two hits. He walked three and struck out four.

Zach Sheranko (Tannersville, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) led off the top of the sixth for West Chester with a single and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jared Melone (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) then walked with one out. Wayne State head coach Ryan Kelley used a trip to the mound to talk with his starter, but decided to leave Horvath in the game to face Shane Dressler (York Haven, Pa./Red Land). Dressler singled to center, scoring Sheranko and advancing Melone to second. After Horvath struck out a batter for the second out of the inning, Sheeran fell behind in the count 0-2, before making Horvath pay for the only mistake he made in the game.

Sheeran finished 2-for-4 at the plate with his second home run of the season and three RBI. Dressler was 2-for-3 with a RBI.

West Chester takes on Grand Valley State University Monday at 11:30 a.m. at Henley Field in Lakeland, Fla.
