West Chester Finishes Spring Trip With 6-4 Triumph Over Wayne State

Box Score

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Joe Sheeran (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) hit a grand slam, and Anthony Salamone (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) hit a solo shot to lead West Chester to a 6-4 victory over Wayne State in the team's final game during spring break as part of the Russmatt Invitational Wednesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.

West Chester (7-3) picked up its second win over Wayne State (8-6) in four days with Sheeran delivering the decisive blow each time. Sunday night, Sheeran hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning that gave the Golden Rams a 4-2 lead at the time. Today, Sheeran hit a grand slam that pushed West Chester's lead to 6-1 during a five-run second. Salamone led off the frame with a solo shot to break a 1-1 tie.

Sheeran finished the game 2-for-4 while the Golden Rams' newest leadoff hitter, center fielder Joey Coyle (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum), went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. He is on a five-game hitting streak, batting .467 (7-for-15) over that stretch with a home run.

Shane Dressler (York Haven, Pa./Red Land), hitting .600 in West Chester's first 10 games (21-for-35), finished 2-for-3 with his third triple of the week down south.

Josh McClain (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) came on in the eighth, got the Rams out of a jam, and finished up the rest of the way to collect his first save of the season. He was the last of six pitchers to stroll to the mound and combine for the win. Joe Peluso (Doylestown, Pa./LaSalle) picked up the win in relief. He pitched 2.2 innings of hitless relief, allowing one unearned run.

West Chester returns home to dig out from the Nor'easter that blanketed the Northeast while they were in the Sunshine State. That weather has altered the Golden Rams' weekend four-game series with Southern New Hampshire. West Chester and SNHU will still play a four-game series this weekend. However, all four games will take place at Maple Zone Sports Village in Aston, Pa. Saturday's doubleheader will be a scheduled 9-innings for both contests and will begin at 11:30 a.m. Sunday's doubleheader will be a 7-inning game, followed by a 9-inning game and will get under way at 12 p.m.
