MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – West Chester University's women's tennis team continued its shutout streak by defeating Millersville in regular-season play Thursday afternoon, 9-0, to earn the PSAC Eastern Division Championship.
The Golden Rams (14-2, 5-0 PSAC) which is currently ranked seventh in the NCAA Atlantic Region polls, ended the regular-season on an eight-game winning streak. This is also the third consecutive undefeated PSAC championship that West Chester has won - extending the team's string of conference wins to 21 while pushing it's consecutive 9-0 winning streak over conference foes to 15.
Claire Uhle (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon), Maddy Shaak (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County), Rylee Power (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown), Abriana Nolan (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) and Steph Cifarelli (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) were all double winners for the Golden Rams as well as taking their singles matches and doubles competitions.
Uhle, who is ranked ninth in the ITA Atlantic Region rankings, paired with fellow teammate Shaak, who is ranked 16, to defeat their opponent 8-3 in the first doubles. Power and Grace Towler (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) were victorious as they teamed up throughout the second match to earn an 8-3 win while Nolan and Cifarelli were 8-1 winners.
All six of the singles matches were straight-set wins for the Golden Rams. Nolan's 6-1, 6-2 win during the fourth singles was the clinching moment for the match. Uhle controlled the first singles match by winning 6-2, 6-0. Shaak would also find a victory in the second match in three sets. She won the first set 6-3, before losing the second 6-4. However, she would control the third set by defeating Millersville's Sarah Sambrick in a 10-7 decision. Power would take control of the third singles match in a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Freshman Sophie Rathmell (Lancaster, Pa./McCaskey) was an 6-2, 6-1 winner during the fifth singles while Cifarelli earned an 6-2, 6-1 verdict at sixth singles.
West Chester will travel to Bloomsburg University on April 21, to participate in the PSAC Semifinals at Burt Reese Tennis Courts. The PSAC Semifinals is set to start at 11 a.m.
