No. 12 West Chester Sweeps Twinbill From Mansfield

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Drew Jarmuz (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple in the nightcap to lead West Chester University to a PSAC East baseball doubleheader sweep from visiting Mansfield Friday afternoon at Serpico Stadium.
 
No. 12 West Chester (28-7, 18-4 PSAC East) opened up a four-game lead on second-place Lock Haven with the pair of wins over Mansfield (20-26, 8-16).
 
Eric Close (Berwyn, Pa./Haverford) threw six scoreless inning in the second game, scattering eight hits to improve to 4-2 on the year. He did walk a batter.
 
Shane Dressler (York Haven, Pa./Red Lion) finished 2-for-3 with a run-scoring double in the first inning that put West Chester on top, 1-0, early. Jarmuz added a two-run double in the fourth, and Nick Bateman (Aston, Pa./Malvern) hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth, scoring Jarmuz following his triple, for the final tally.
 
Jared Melone (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) scored four runs in the doubleheader – two each game.
 
In the opener, Jon Fisher (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) tossed six innings, allowing a three-run homer in the third, but, otherwise stayed out of trouble. He surrendered three runs on four hits, walked a pair and struck out six. Josh McClain (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) threw a scoreless seventh for his sixth save of the spring.
 
Robert Knox (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) finished 3-for-3 in the opener while Nick Ward (Unionville, Pa./Unionville) went 1-for-2 with a two-run shot, his fifth of the season, in the bottom of the third.
 
Clay Harwick (Lansdale, Pa./Methacton) contributed a RBI double in the sixth to push the Golden Rams' lead to 5-3. Mansfield retaliated with a run off McClain in the top of the seventh. But, the Mountaineers could not get the equalizer, stranding two runners on base to end the game.
 
These same two teams will be at it again on Saturday afternoon in Mansfield. Game one begins at 1 p.m.
