Early Goals Propel Men’s Soccer Past Mercyhurst, 3-1


ERIE, Pa. - West Chester's men's soccer team (3-1-1, 2-0 PSAC) took care of business on the road this afternoon in a pivotal PSAC matchup, defeating host Mercyhurst (3-2, 1-1 PSAC) by a final score of 3-1.

How it Happened:
  • Junior Andrew Slater (Hanover, Pa./South West) scored his first goal of the season just six minutes into the contest when he settled a bouncing ball in the box and deposited it in the bottom left side of the goal.
  • Freshman Doug Goitia(Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) scored a goal of his own on a breakaway just five minutes later to give the Golden Rams a 2-0 lead.
  • Senior Tim French(Bensalem, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) added a goal of his own in the closing minutes of the contest when he finished off a corner from Brett Miller(Washington Crossing, Pa./Council Rock North) to give the Golden Rams a 3-0 advantage.
  • Mercyhurst broke through in the closing seconds when Christopher Mankengo converted a penalty kick to help Mercyhurst avoid the shutout.
  • Sr., GK Matt Palmer (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) recorded three saves, earning his second straight victory between the pipes for the Golden Rams.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Mercyhurst held a 20-14 edge in shots overall.
  • The Golden Rams did maintain a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Mercyhurst managed a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon.
  • This was the second goal of Slaters' career and his first on the season.
  • Goitia's goal was the second goal of his career and his second goal on the year.
  • French scored his first goal of the season and the fourth of his career.
