Volleyball Swept at East Stroudsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The West Chester University volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (20-25, 14-24, 21-25) sweep at the hands of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Southeast Division leader East Stroudsburg on Saturday inside the Koehler Field House. Saturday's defeat was the third straight loss for the Golden Rams and fourth loss in their last five matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A kill by freshman Julia Vreeswyk (YARDLEY, PA/PENNSBURY) put the Golden Rams (17-6, 6-5 PSAC) in front 12-10 in the first set, before a 5-0 run by East Stroudsburg (18-5, 8-3 PSAC) placed the home team in front ,15-12. Down 19-13, another kill from Vreeswyk sparked a 5-1 spurt for the Golden Rams to hack the ESU advantage to just two points (20-18) late. The Warriors capped off the opener by scoring the final three points of the set to grab the 25-20 victory to kick off the match.
  • East Stroudsburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the second frame and never looked back. Up handily (21-12), the Warriors logged four of the final six points of the stanza to claim the second set, 25-14.
  • The third set was the closest of the bunch, as both squads battled to a 21-21 tie in the waning moments. With Olivia Rudjord at the serve, the Warriors managed to close out the third by scoring four-unanswered points to win the set 25-21 to complete the divisional sweep.
 
 BY THE NUMBERS
  • West Chester's 32 total kills and 29 assists against the Warriors were both season lows.
  • The Golden Rams' two total blocks on Saturday were the fewest for West Chester in a match since September 2016.
  • Vreesywk paced the WCU offense with nine kills on the afternoon to give the outside hitter a team-high 240 total kills this season.
  • Senior Jillian Grammer's (CENTER VALLEY, PA./SOUTHERN LEHIGH) 22 assists and 11 digs on Saturday gave the setter her 15th double-double of the season, while graduate student Nicki Yates (COOPERSBURG, PA./SOUTHERN LEHIGH) scooped a team-high 16 digs in the loss.

  • The Golden Rams will have the next six days off before traveling to the Katherine Mabis McKenna Center on Friday (October 19) to square off against Seton Hill at 7:00 p.m.
