Volleyball Suffers 3-1 Defeat at Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The West Chester University volleyball team traveled to the Pucillio Gymnasium on Tuesday night to square off against Millersville in a crucial Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Southeast Division matchup. After grabbing the opening frame 27-25, the visiting Golden Rams went on to drop the next three-straight to the Marauders to fall 3-1 (27-25, 22-25, 15-25, 21-25) on Tuesday night to give WCU its seventh loss in its last eight contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opening set was a back-and-forth affair, with Millersville (14-11, 9-7 PSAC) grabbing the slim 25-24 advantage late in the frame. With the match hanging in the balance, West Chester (18-10, 7-9 PSAC) answered back with kills from senior Allie Duffy (CARLISLE, PA./CARLISLE) and freshman Sarah Polacek (JOHNSTOWN, PA /WESTMONT HILLTOP) – paired with a MU attack error – to storm back to take the opener, 27-25.
  • Trailing 0-1 in the match, the host Marauders rattled off the next three-straight sets to claim the divisional victory 3-1 on Tuesday night.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Golden Rams logged a .209 (54-22-153) hitting percentage against the Marauders, marking the highest hitting percentage that West Chester has recorded in its last 11 outings.
  • Junior Rachel Robb's (BLACKWOOD, N.J./PAUL VI) 16 kills on Tuesday paced the West Chester offense for the second match in a row, while Polacek's 11 kills against MU marked the second time this season that the newcomer had double-digit kills in a contest.
  • Senior Jillian Grammer (CENTER VALLEY, PA./SOUTHERN LEHIGH) went off for 46 assists and 15 digs versus Millersville to give the setter her 20th double-double of the season. Following Tuesday's action Grammer has 4,520 career assists, which puts the Center Valley native just 51 helpers behind Lisa Yeasted's (2005-08) WCU record of 4571 with at least three matches remaining this season.
  • Freshman Grace Whitney (GLENSIDE, PA/ABINGTON) set a new career mark with nine total blocks in the loss, while graduate student Nicki Yates (COOPERSBURG, PA./SOUTHERN LEHIGH) led the Purple and Gold with 21 digs on Tuesday night.
