Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women's Tennis Falls 5-2 Against Mercyhurst on Friday

ERIE, Pa. – The West Chester University women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Merychurst University on Friday on the campus of Penn State Behrend.

MATCH RUNDOWN
  • Friday's contest marked the first team event of the year for either side, as both the Golden Rams and the Lakers both started the season by participating in the same two individual tournaments (ITA Atlantic Regionals and PSAC Individual Championships).

DOUBLES
  • Mercyhurst took third singles 6-0 to start the match before grabbing second position 6-3 to go up 2-0.
  • Down 0-2 in doubles, the WCU duo of senior Rylee Power (NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA MARPLE NEWTOWN) and freshman Alyssa Skulsky (CHURCHVILLE, PA/COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH H. S) came through in a big way, downing MU's top tandem and recent PSAC Doubles Champions Kayla Frost/Sangeeta Roopan 7-5 to give WCU its first victory of the day.
  • Despite winning two doubles matches on Friday, the Lakers took a 1-0 lead into singles play because of a recent rule change that gives the best-of-three winner in doubles just one point toward their overall team total.
SINGLES
  • First singles pitted two of the best the PSAC has to offer against each other, as Power squared off against Frost at first flight. The 2017-18 PSAC East Athlete of the Year, Power came into the bout with two singles victories of the season, while Frost – who was First Team All-PSAC last year and the No. 2 seed in last week's championships – entered after tallying 25 victories during her junior campaign. After splitting the first two sets on Friday, Power was able to hold off Forst in the deciding frame 7-6 to give Power two victories on the day.
  • Danisa Erriad (JAKARTA, INDONESIA/ES INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL) played well beyond her years on Friday afternoon, as the freshman left Erie with a 7-5, 5-2 defeat over Athina Tsagkaraki at third position. Entering her second year with the Lakers, Tsagkaraki went 22-5 overall in singles last season, including a 20-1 mark in dual matches.
  • The Lakers took four of the six singles matches on Friday to secure the 5-2 victory.
UP NEXT
  • The Golden Rams return to action tomorrow for a match on the road against Edinboro at 11:00 a.m.
