Women's Basketball Gets Clipped by No. 23 Jefferson on Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- Riding a three-game winning streak, the West Chester University women's basketball team (4-3) took to the road on Wednesday night looking to continue its winning ways vs No. 23 Jefferson (7-0). The game remained tight throughout the first half as West Chester headed to the halftime break trailing by just six, but a big second half from the Golden Rams' hosts proved to be too much in the 82-56 defeat.

How it Happened:
  • In the first quarter, West Chester opened the scoring with a fastbreak layup from Gabrielle Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) before Jefferson answered back with a basket of its own to even the score at 2-2. West Chester went on an 8-2 run at this point that lasted until there were just over five minutes to play in the first quarter to take an early 10-4 lead. However, Jefferson battled back in the final five minutes of the opening quarter, outscoring West Chester 14-6 to close out the quarter with a slim 18-16 lead.
  • In the second quarter, the two teams traded baskets for much of the opening quarter, but a late run by the hosts allowed Jefferson to take a 38-32 lead to the halftime break.
  • For the second consecutive game, the third quarter was the difference maker, as Jefferson outscored its guests 24-10 in the third to take a commanding 62-42 lead to the final quarter of play.
  • In the fourth, West Chester attempted to battle back scoring by 14 points while holding its hosts to just 20 points of its own but it was not enough to complete the comeback in the 82-56 defeat.

Golden Ram Roundup:
  • Zhane Snow (Wilmington, Del./Concord) was the Golden Rams leading scorer as she scored 12 points for the third game in a row to lead a trio of Rams in double-figures. Reigning PSAC East Player of the Week Destiny Jefferson (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) was next as she scored 11 points of her own while also pulling down a team-high seven rebounds. Teammate Gabrielle Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) was the final Golden Ram in double-figures as she scored 10 points of her own in the loss.
  • West Chester ended the contest shooting 32.4 % (22-of-68) from the field and 33.3 % (7-of-21) from beyond the arc. West Chester also shot 71.4 % (5-of-7) from the charity stripe in the loss.

Ram Recap:
  • Caitlyn Cunningham had a huge night for the Rams, finishing her evening with a triple-double as she registered game-highs in points (18), rebounds (10), and assists (10) finishing as one of four Rams in double-figures. Erin Maher chipped in 16 points of her own, while Alynna Williams and Beverly Kum scored 14 points and 13 points, respectively.
  • Jefferson also ended the game with a 44-38 advantage in rebounds.
  • As a team, Jefferson shot the ball very well, ending the night shooting 48.4 % (31-of-64) from field goal range while also shooting 33.3 % (5-of-15) from beyond the arc. The Rams also had a solid night at the charity stripe, going 15-of-19 (78.9 %) from the line.

  • West Chester will be back in action on Saturday afternoon against Edinboro with that game scheduled to tip off at 1 p.m.
