INDIANAPOLIS, In. - West Chester University senior men's basketball player
Tyrell Long (Philadelphia, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt) has been selected to the Bevo Francis Award Top 50 watchlist, as announced by Small College Basketball on Thursday afternoon.
Named after former University of Rio Grande standout Clarence "Bevo" Francis, this national award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball. Considerations will be season statistics and individual achievements, awards, personal character and team achievements.
Started in 2015, the Bevo Francis Award starts with a pool in January of the Top 100 student-athletes from Division II, Division III, the NAIA, USCAA and NCCAA and that group will be trimmed over the next few months until an eventual winner is selected on April 2.
NCAA DII leads all divisions with 31 individual selections in this year's Top 50 pool and Long joins Shippensburg's Dustin Sleva as the lone representatives from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference to be included in this prestigious group. Former Bevo Francis Award recipients include Davenport senior Dominez Burnett in 2016 and Northwest Missouri State senior Justin Pitts in 2017.
Coming out of Philadelphia, Long leads the No. 23 Golden Rams and ranks 11th in the PSAC with 19.1 points per game. The guard currently is tops on the squad with 7.5 rebounds per game and his 71 total assists and 14 blocks put the senior at No. 2 on the squad through 24 games. In his last outing, Long dropped 16 points on Lock Haven to become just the 25th player in West Chester's men's basketball history to reach 1000 career points.
West Chester heads into its game at East Stroudsburg on Saturday with a 20-4 overall record and atop the PSAC Eastern Division standings with a 16-4 mark in conference games.
