SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The West Chester University women's tennis team capped off its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division swing on Sunday afternoon as the team traveled to the SRU Tennis Court to square off against Slippery Rock University.
The Golden Rams got a doubles point for the first time this season and two wins in singles play, but it would be not enough as West Chester left Slippery Rock with the 6-3 defeat on Sunday.
WCU drops to 2-7 on the year following the loss, while The Rock draws even to 7-7 overall with the victory on Sunday.
Following two defeats in doubles action, the Golden Rams got their first doubles victory of the spring thanks to a 9-7 win at No. 2 position by the freshmen duo of
Leandra Roelker (Allentown, Pa. / Salisbury) and
Elaina Rochford (West Chester, Pa. / Henderson) to bring the score to 2-1 (SRU) heading into singles play.
The Golden Rams then dropped three singles matches to fall behind 5-1, before freshman
Julia Mowrey (Bethlehem, Pa. / Notre Dame) claimed No. 5 singles in straight sets (6-3,6-3) and junior
Rylee Power (Newtown Square, Pa / Marple Newtown) grabbed first flight in a tiebreaker (6-2, 2-6, 10-6) to bring the score to 5-3 overall. The Rock sealed its victory at the No. 3 position following a highly-contested bout that saw WCU's freshman
Shannon Nixon (Wyncote, Pa. / Cheltenham) push the game to a tiebreaker where she fell 21-19 in the third and deciding frame.
After starting the season with battles against four PSAC Western Division opponents, WCU will finally begin play against fellow PSAC East opponents on Wednesday (March 27), when the team travels to face East Stroudsburg at 3:30 p.m.
