BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - After blanking Holy Family 9-0 at home on Thursday, the West Chester University women's tennis team hit the road on Saturday morning to square off against conference foe Bloomsburg University inside the Burt Reese Tennis Center.
Despite a two win-day day by freshman
Elaina Rochford (West Chester, Pa. / Henderson), the Golden Rams fell 5-4 to the Huskies on Saturday in a hard-fought battle between two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference representatives.
The loss drops WCU to 4-8 overall and marks the first time that the Golden Rams have lost to a PSAC Eastern Division opponent since the 2014 season (18-1). On the flip side, Bloomsburg improves to 4-5 on the year and moves to 2-0 in league games after Saturday's action.
The Golden Rams earned one doubles point in Saturday's match against the Huskies, as the freshmen duo of
Leandra Roelker (Allentown, Pa. / Salisbury) and Rochford teamed up to take the 8-4 victory at second flight.
In singles, junior
Rylee Power (Newtown Square, Pa / Marple Newtown) took No. 1 position 6-2, 6-1, freshman
Shannon Nixon (Wyncote, Pa. / Cheltenham) claimed the 6-1,6-2 victory at third position. The Golden Rams final singles victory came when Rochford secured her second victory of the day after downing BU's Isabella Sarquiz 6-1,6-0 at third flight.
West Chester continues PSAC play on Monday (April 2) when to team travels to take on Kutztown University at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday's match against the Golden Bears will be the last road contest for WCU until April 11, as the Golden Rams will host their next five matches at home.
