KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Following a handful of weather-related postponements, the West Chester University women's tennis team finally returned to the court on Thursday afternoon, traveling to the Keystone Tennis Courts to battle Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) rival Kutztown University.
The Golden Rams dominated the host Golden Bears on Thursday, earning the convincing 8-1 victory on the day to push WCU's overall record to 5-8 on the year and 2-1 in league play.
The tandem of
Julia Mowrey (Bethlehem, Pa. / Notre Dame) and
Sofia Von der Heyde (Exton, Pa. / Great Valley) put the first point on the board for the Golden Rams with an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles, before the duo of
Rylee Power (Newtown Square, Pa / Marple Newtown) and
Shannon Nixon (Wyncote, Pa. / Cheltenham) grabbed first flight 8-2 to put the visitors on top 2-0. Finally, the team of
Leandra Roelker (Allentown, Pa. / Salisbury) and Eliana Rochford
(West Chester, Pa. / Henderson) sealed the doubles sweep for the Golden Rams with an 8-3 victory at second flight to give the freshmen duo their fifth-straight doubles win and put WCU on top 3-0 heading into singles action.
West Chester was just as dominant in singles play, the visitors grabbed five of the six matchups with only one of those contests going longer than two sets. Power's 6-2,7-5 victory at first flight marked the fifth-straight win for the junior at the top spot in singles and pushes the Wyncote natives record to 3-0 this season in singles matches against conference opponents.
The Golden Rams will take a step outside of conference play on Sunday (April 8), as the team welcomes Virginia State to the South Campus courts for a match set to start at 1:00 p.m.
