WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Coming off a two-match road trip, the West Chester University women's tennis team returned to the South Campus Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon to square off against Chestnut Hill College in a non-conference showdown.
The Golden Rams (6-8) swept doubles and claimed four of the six singles contests on the day to take the 7-2 victory over the Griffins (4-9) at home.
The pairing of
Rylee Power (Newtown Square, Pa / Marple Newtown) and
Shannon Nixon (Wyncote, Pa. / Cheltenham) took No. 1 position 8-3 to give the group their sixth doubles victory of the season, before
Leandra Roelker (Allentown, Pa. / Salisbury) and
Elaina Rochford (West Chester, Pa. / Henderson) grabbed their team-leading 11th victory of the season with an 8-4 win at second flight.
Julia Mowrey (Bethlehem, Pa. / Notre Dame) and
Sofia Von der Heyde (Exton, Pa. / Great Valley) ended doubles action by holding on to claim third position 8-6 to put West Chester in the driver set entering singles.
Mowrey got WCU's first win in singles with a 6-2,6-2 victory at fifth flight and Von der Heyde followed with 7-5,6-3 triumph at No. 6 singles to put the Golden Rams in front, 5-1. After a loss at position three, the Golden Rams closed out the match with victories by Powers (6-2, WR) and Rochford (6-2,6-3) to seal the 7-2 win for the home team.
WCU returns to the South Campus Tennis Courts tomorrow, April 11, to take on Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent Shippensburg University at 3:30 p.m.
