WILMINGTON, Del. – In preparation for its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Semifinal matchup against top-seeded Indiana (Pa.) on Friday, the West Chester University women's tennis team headed to the Delcastle Tennis Center on Wednesday to square off against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) representative Goldey-Beacom College.
Entering Wednesday's non-conference contest as the No. 36 ranked team in the country and the top program in the East Region according to today's NCAA Division II regional rankings, the Lightning (15-2) handed the Golden Rams (10-10) an 8-1 defeat at home to end the regular season.
West Chester fell behind 0-2 to start the match as the teams of
Rylee Power (NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA/MARPLE NEWTOWN)/Shannon Nixon (WYNCOTE, PA./CHELTENHAM) and
Elaina Rochford (WEST CHESTER, PA./HENDERSON)/Leandra Roelker (ALLENTOWN, PA./SALISBURY) both fell 8-2 at their respective positions. The Golden Rams got their lone point of the afternoon at the No. 3 doubles spot, as the duo of
Julia Mowrey (BETHLEHEM, PA./NOTRE DAME) and
Sofia Von der Heyde (EXTON, PA./GREAT VALLEY) came out victorious 8-2 to give the pairing their eighth doubles win of the 2017-18 season.
WCU dropped its first four singles matches in straight sets, before Roelker pushed GBC's Catarina Zheng to three sets in a 6-4,1-6,3-6 defeat at position two and Mowrey went three sets against Manuela Cornejo in a No. 5 singles match that came down to two tiebreakers.
West Chester will travel to the campus of Bloomsburg University on Friday (4/20) to square off against the top-seeded and No. 38 ranked Crimson Hawks of Indiana University (Pa.) in the PSAC Semifinals at 2:30 p.m.
