Volleyball Starts 2018 With Two Victories at Georgian Court

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The West Chester University volleyball team earned its first two wins of the 2018 campaign on Saturday, as the Golden Rams defeated Bentley 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-16) before downing host Georgian Court 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-20) at the 2018 Georgian Court Tournament inside the GCU Wellness Center.

ON THE DAY
  • The Golden Rams outhit their opponents in every set, highlighted by an errorless .485 clip in the deciding set against Georgian Court.
  • WCU notched 16 blocks across the two matches, with freshman Grace Whitney (GLENSIDE, PA/ABINGTON) accounting for six of those swats.
  • Senior Jillian Grammer (CENTER VALLEY, PA./SOUTHERN LEHIGH) handed out 61 total assists on Saturday and graduate student Nicki Yates (COOPERSBURG, PA./SOUTHERN LEHIGH) notched 30 digs across the two contests.

VS. BENTLEY
  • The Golden Rams never trailed in the match and WCU was only tied with Bentley twice overall (both in the second set).
  • West Chester started set three up 8-0 and ended the frame by scoring seven of the final eight points in the match.
  • WCU hit at .245 (38-13-102) clip while holding Bentley to just a .073 hitting percentage.
  • Seniors Abbie Dischert (WILMINGTON, DE./CONCORD) and Allie Duffy (CARLISLE, PA./CARLISLE) both logged nine kills in the win and Grammer handed out a match-high 29 assists. Yates led the defense with 18 digs and senior Alex Gleason (LANDENBERG, PA./KENNETT) logged a career-high five service aces in the victory.

VS. GEORGIAN COURT
  • WCU withstood a 5-0 run by the Lions in the opening set and was able to build a lead as large as nine points throughout the frame.
  • The Golden Rams found themselves down for the first time of the tournament in the second set against Georgian Court. Despite a late GCU push, a kill by freshman Julia Vreeswyk (YARDLEY, PA/PENNSBURY) would seal the hard-fought victory for West Chester in set two.
  • Dischert paced all players with 17 kills in the match and Grammer chipped in 32 helpers in the win. Defensively, Yates scooped up 12 digs and Whitney held down the net with a match-high four blocks.

NEXT UP
  • WCU (2-0) returns home next Friday to host the 2018 edition of Ram Fest on August 31 and September 1 inside the Hollinger Field House.
  • The Golden Rams will play four matches across the two-day event, starting with a meeting against Goldey-Beacom (2:00 p.m.) and a match versus Franklin Pierce (6:00 p.m.) on Friday evening. West Chester closes out Ram Fest on Saturday with matches against both Salem (10:00 a.m.) and Fairmont State (2:00 p.m.) to wrap up the tournament.
  • West Chester has gone undefeated (19-0) at Ram Fest over the last five seasons. The Golden Rams last surrendered a match at Ram Fest all the way back in 2012, when the squad dropped a 0-3 decision to Daemen.
