Men's Soccer Draws with Mercyhurst

WEST CHESTER, Pa.- The West Chester University men's soccer team was back in action this afternoon to kick off its longest home stand of the 2018 season against PSAC rival Mercyhurst. West Chester played to a draw for the second time in three games as the game ended with a final score of 2-2.

How it Happened:

  • Mercyhurst broke through first registering a goal in the 12th minute, when Hady Sarr took an assist from Chris Lund to give the Lakers the early 1-0 lead.
  • In the 65th minute, West Chester got this goal back when Kyle Hoops (Phoenixville, Pa./Great Valley) buried a PK after being taken down in the box to even the score at 1.
  • A few minutes Sarr broke through again this time off an assist from Wilkinson to regain the 2-1 lead with just over 15 minutes to play.
  • West Chester answered back just over a minute later as Jason Pixley (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) found the back of the net for the third time this year and second time in as many games off an assist from Daniel Grindrod (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) to even the score at 2-2.
  • The two sides played another 37 minutes after this and despite numerous opportunities for both teams neither side was able to break through, thus, ending the game in a 2-2 draw.

Inside the Numbers:

  • In the first half, Mercyhurst held a narrow advantage in shots recording four shots compared to just three for West Chester. The Lakers also held a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal after the first 45 minutes of play.
  • Mercyhurst continued this advantage during the second ending the game with a 15-12 edge in total shots including a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Mercyhurst also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Will Marshall (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) played the full 110 minutes in goal for West Chester making eight impressive saves to attempt to hold off Mercyhurst while his counterpart Martin Jarc made two saves of his own to slow down the Golden Rams.

Up Next:

West Chester will take a brief break from conference play on Tuesday afternoon when the University of District of Columbia comes to town for a non-conference matchup beginning at 4 p.m.
