Hoops Propels West Chester to OT Victory Over UDC

WEST CHESTER, Pa.- On the heels of a hard fought draw with Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon, West Chester (3-1-2) took a quick break from conference play to face off against non-conference opponent University of the District of Columbia (2-4-1). For the second consecutive game and third time in four games 90 minutes was not enough to decide a winner in this contest. Kyle Hoops (Phoenixville, Pa./Great Valley) was the hero as he buried the game-winner off a long cross from Brett Miller (Washington Crossing, Pa./Council Rock North) to carry West Chester to the 1-0 non-league victory.

How it Happened:
  • In the first half, each side had its chances but thanks to a strong defensive effort from both teams the game remained scoreless heading to the half.
  • Each team had its chances again in the second half but once again strong defensive efforts combined with a touch of bad luck for each side kept the game scoreless through 90 minutes.
  • Finally, in the 96th minute Hoops came through after a beautiful cross from Miller to propel West Chester to the overtime victory.
Inside the Numbers:
  • West Chester held a slight advantage in total shots and shots on goal after the first half taking six shots and two on goal compared to just three total shots and no shots on goal for UDC.
  • In the second half, West Chester continued to outshoot its guests ending regulation with a 12-7 advantage in total shots although shots on goal were even at three shots each.
  • At the conclusion of the contest West Chester held a slim 14-8 advantage in shots with shots on goal ending up even at four for each side. Will Marshall (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) made four nice saves for the Golden Rams to neutralize a powerful Firebird offense while his counterpart freshman goalie Milton Diaz made three strong saves of his own to try and hold off West Chester.
  • West Chester also ended the game with a slight edge 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
  • This is the third overtime contest of the season for West Chester but it is the Golden Rams first overtime victory as the previous two such contests have ended in draws.
Up Next:
West Chester will wrap up its three-game home stand on Friday morning when PSAC opponent Pitt-Johnstown comes to Rockwell Field with that game kicking off at 11 a.m.
