MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The West Chester University volleyball team kicked off the 2018 Marauders Clash on Friday by defeating the University of the Sciences 3-1 (25-15, 20-25, 25-10, 25-20), before downing Bloomfield College 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-15) at the Pucillo Gym on the campus of Millersville University.
ON THE DAY
- The Golden Rams (8-0) ended the first day of action with a near .300 hitting percentage (.294) across both matches and Golden Rams managed to eclipse the .300 mark in four of their seven sets overall.
- WCU's defense logged 17 total blocks on Friday afternoon. Led by Julia Vreeswyk's (YARDLEY, PA PENNSBURY) six rejections between the two matches.
- Vreeswyk led the Golden Rams with 23 kills on the day, while her 16 kills and 20 overall points against USciences were both the most in the freshman's young career.
- Jillian Grammer (CENTER VALLEY, PA./SOUTHERN LEHIGH) paced all players with 80 total assists on Friday and her 44 helpers against USciences marked the most for the senior this season, and highest total for the setter since November 11, 2017.
- Graduate student Nicki Yates (COOPERSBURG, PA./SOUTHERN LEHIGH) ended day one of the Marauders Clash scooping up 35 digs overall, highlighted by a 20-dig performance against USciences to kick off the tournament.
VS. USCIENCES
- West Chester hit for a .264 clip (51-18-125) against the Devils and held the visitors to just a .096 mark on the day.
- Freshman Grace Whitney (GLENSIDE, PA/ABINGTON) recorded a career-high 11 kills in the match to go along with five total blocks.
- Vreeswyk's six total blocks against the Devils were a career best, while senior Abbie Dischert's (WILMINGTON, DE./CONCORD) 10 digs were the most for the outside hitter this year.
VS. BLOOMFIELD
- The Golden Rams notched 45 kills (on 117 total attacks) against just seven errors against the Bears to finish the match with a .325 hitting percentage.
- West Chester's seven errors against Bloomfield were the fewest by the squad this season and the lowest overall total since the five errors the Golden Rams put up against Cheyney on October 10 of last year.
- Senior Allie Duffy (CARLISLE, PA./CARLISLE) and junior Rachel Robb (BLACKWOOD, N.J./PAUL VI) both recorded eight kills in the win, with Robb adding three block assists and a dig.
- Grammer logged 36 assists and 10 digs against the Bears to give the senior her second double-double of the season.
- Yates scooped a team-high 15 digs in the victory to give the DS at least 10 digs in every match this season.
- Dischert collected a season-high 11 digs against Bloomfield and added five kills
