The Golden Rams (17-14 overall, 5-13 PSAC) won the first set 25-20 but lost the next two 25-23 and 25-23. The grinded out a 26-24 win in the fourth and fell 15-11 in the fifth.
How it happened:
- West Chester immediately gained Shepherd's respect by taking a 10-3 lead in the first set when freshman Lilly Acquaviva (Lafayette Hill, Pa. / Plymouth Whitemarsh) recorded a kill. The Rams crawled back into it, making the score 19-17, but the Golden Rams ultimately pulled away.
- The two teams rallied back and forth in the second set. Shepherd took a 5-0 lead, but West Chester chipped away and found itself down 22-20 when freshman Mel June (Morton, Pa. / Ridley) served an ace. However, the Rams and Golden Rams split the last six points.
- Acquaviva kills made the third set 7-3, 12-9 and 19-6 in favor of West Chester, but Shepherd rallied for six straight points late in the set to go up 2-1 in the match.
- Down 19-15, a kill from Acquaviva sparked a Golden Rams rally to tie it at 19. Tied at 24, sophomore Julia Vreeswyk (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) notched a kill to give West Chester the lead, and they then forced a fifth set on a Shepherd error.
- Shepherd and West Chester traded blows and were tied at 11 in the fifth set before the Rams picked up the final four points.
