WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Melanie Wojewoda (Amelia, Ohio) posted a personal-best score on the uneven bars to win first place in that event, and Jessica Meakim (Downingtown, Pa.) won the floor exercise, as host West Chester University topped both William & Mary and Rhode Island College in a tri-meet at Sturzebecker Health Science Center Friday night.
West Chester (8-2) captured its second tri-meet sweep in as many weeks by the slimmest of margins, posting a 192.675 – the Golden Rams' top score of the season for the third consecutive meet. William & Mary was right behind them in second place with a 192.525 while Rhode Island College placed third with a 182.825.
"Our word for the year is 'build'," West Chester head coach Barb Cordova said afterwards. "Every meet, it's build to the next meet, and they are building. I'm excited to see where we are going to go from here.
"We didn't have a perfect meet today. We had to count a fall on beam. So, we still have room to build."
The Golden Rams scored a meet-best and season high 48.45 on the bars, which has been an area of focus for Cordova. Wojewoda won the event with a personal-best score of 9.85 while both Jordan Miranda (Winchester, Mass.) and Myranda Marshall (Lancaster, Pa.) tied for third with a 9.7.
"Last week, we struggled on the bars," Cordova said. "So, during the week, we really worked hard on the bars. I think that performance really gave us momentum the rest of the meet."
West Chester also posted a 48.875 on the floor exercise in the final rotation to overcome William & Mary at the end. Meakim and teammate Rose Fanara (Fredericksburg, Va.) finished in a three-way tie for first place with William & Mary's Samantha Sakti on the floor. Each of the gymnasts registered a 9.85. Sakti also won both the balance beam and the vault as well.
Meakim posted a 37.95 in the all-around to place second.
"I did not realize that we were that close to William & Mary heading into the floor exercise," Cordova admitted. "I try to just focus on each gymnast's performance. So, I had no idea we were that close."
On the vault, freshman Ashley Duke (Fredericksburg, Va.) was the Golden Rams' top performer, finishing third with a 9.65. Meakim tied for sixth with teammate Brashlyn Johnson (Aynor, S.C.) with each scoring a 9.55.
Sarah Boyd (St. Petersburg, Fla.) placed third on the beam with a 9.725 while Wojewoda was fourth with a 9.65.
West Chester, which has not dipped below 192 in any of its meets in the month of February, travels to Ursinus on Sunday for a 1 p.m. dual meet with the Bears.
