Women’s Gymnastics Comes From Behind To Defeat Cornell

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– West Chester University's women's gymnasts trailed visiting Cornell University by almost two full points heading into the final event of the day, but pulled off its highest score of the year on the floor exercise to overtake the Big Red and snare a 193.3-193.125 victory on Senior Day inside Sturzebecker Health Science Center.

West Chester's 193.3 also was a team best for 2019. The Golden Rams overcame a 1.825 deficit during the final event to pick up the win and improve to 13-4 heading into the ECAC Championships next weekend.


Sr., Jessica Meakim (Downingtown, Pa.) clinched the comeback win with a 9.925 that tied the school record in that event. As the final gymnast on the floor, the local product nailed her routine and handed the Golden Rams the meet. Meakim also finished in a tie for third on the vault with a 9.7. She scored a 38.2 in the all-around Saturday afternoon.


Meakim's meet-clinching performance on the floor came on the heels of another spectacular effort – this time from junior Sarah Boyd (St. Petersburg, Fla.) – who tied a school record of her own on the balance beam with a 9.875.


Both Meakim and Boyd won those respective events, individually. So., Yoli Nodarse (Pompton Plains, N.J.) was right behind Boyd on the beam with a 9.85 of her own.


Meanwhile Sr., Myranda Marshall (Lancaster, Pa.) tied for first on the uneven bars with a 9.8.


Following the meet, the West Chester University women's gymnastics team honored its four graduating seniors with a short video and a tribute to the foursome's college gymnastics career.


West Chester now prepares for the 2019 ECAC Division II Women's Gymnastics Championships next weekend in Bridgeport, Conn.
