WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The West Chester University women's tennis team opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division play on Saturday afternoon when the Golden Rams welcomed Kutztown University to the South Campus Courts.
The Golden Rams (4-4, 1-0 PSAC) played arguably their best tennis of the season against the Golden Bears on Saturday, as West Chester earned its first sweep of the season (7-0) to move WCU to 1-0 in conference play ahead of its contest at East Stroudsburg on Tuesday. On the other side of the court, Kutztown, who have now lost each of its last three matches, drops to 2-7 overall (0-1 PSAC) following Saturday's sweep.
The home team won Saturday's double point in convincing fashion, as West Chester won all three doubles matches by a combined score of 18-5.
Sophomore
Elaina Rochford (WEST CHESTER, PA./HENDERSON) got things rolling in the singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at fifth position, before
Alyssa Skulsky (CHURCHVILLE, PA/COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH) secured second flight 6-1, 6-3 to put the Golden Rams in front, 3-0.
Danisa Erriad (JAKARTA, INDONESIA/ES INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL) cruised to 6-1, 6-0 victory at the second spot to give the freshman her team-leading third singles victory in a row. Sophomore
Shannon Nixon (WYNCOTE, PA./CHELTENHAM) secured the point at sixth position with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph, prior to senior
Rylee Power (NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA/MARPLE NEWTOWN) (6-3, 6-1) and sophomore
Leandra Roelker (ALLENTOWN, PA./SALISBURY) (6-4, 6-1) both notching victories at their positions to secure the 7-0 sweep for the Golden Rams on Saturday afternoon.
