Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 2 West Chester Downs Mercyhurst, 3-1

ERIE, Pa. - Senior Caitlin Kelly (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) scored a pair of goals in the first quarter to lead second-ranked West Chester to a 3-1 victory over host Mercyhurst Saturday afternoon.

West Chester (3-0) remained unbeaten on the year with the road win by scoring all three goals in the first half and limiting Mercyhurst (1-3) to just four shots the entire game. With No. 1 Shippensburg's loss earlier in the week, the Golden Rams aim to be the top-ranked team in Division II when the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) releases its coaches poll next week.

How it Happened:
*  Katie Thompson (Washington, N.J./Warren) put the visitors on top three minutes into the contest when she finished a cross from Emma Velez (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan).
*  One minute later, Kelly scored the first of her two consecutive tallies to double the Rams' lead.
*   Kelly scored again in the 14th minute as the Golden Rams tallied all three goals in the first 15 minutes of the contest. Sydney Ostroski (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) got the assist.
*  Mercyhurst scored its lone tally in the second quarter. But, the Lakers could not get any closer.

Inside the Box Score:
*  All the scoring took place in the first 25 minutes of the contest.
*  West Chester limited Mercyhurst to just four shots in the game while taking 23 themselves.
*  Claire Nielsen (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) made one save in the win. Mercyhurst's goalie made 13.

Up Next:
*  West Chester travels to Shippensburg for a non-league showdown that will most likely feature No. 1 vs. No. 2 in a rematch of both the 2018 PSAC Championship Game, won by West Chester, and the NCAA national semifinal, won by Shippensburg.
