WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester University volleyball cruised to a sweep over Goldey-Beacom in the season opener, winning sets 25-16, 25-12, 25-20 on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Rams had a 19-15 lead in the first set and pulled away by winning six of the last seven points.

In the second set, West Chester jumped out to a 12-2 advantage and never looked back.

The Lightning battled in set three as they trailed 17-15 before the Golden Rams scored seven straight points to run away with the match.

Sophomores
Julia Vreeswyk (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) and
Grace Whitney (Glenside, Pa. / Abington) led WCU in kills with 11 and 10, respectively. Vreeswyk had a .308 hitting percentage, and Whitney hit .467.

Freshman
Jillian Borgerding (Highlands Rach, Colo. / Highlands Ranch) recorded 35 assists, eight digs and three kills in her first collegiate match.

Graduate student
Shaye Whiteman (Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg) had a team-high 19 digs in her first game with the Golden Rams.

The Golden Rams held GBC to a .019 team hitting percentage.

West Chester has another match at 6 p.m. on Friday against Holy Family University. The Golden Rams play at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday as well.
