West Chester Dominates In 79-52 Win Over Mansfield

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester University women's basketball posted its largest margin of victory this season on Saturday at Hollinger Field House with a 79-52 win over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponent Mansfield University.

The Golden Rams improve to 8-12 overall and 6-9 in conference with the victory. The win keeps them comfortably in sixth place in the PSAC East Division with seven games remaining on the regular season schedule. Six teams from each of the two PSAC divisions make the postseason tournament.

Saturday's game was close throughout the first half as the Mounties (3-18 overall, 1-14 PSAC) went into the locker room down 34-31. However, a good layup by WCU freshman Sasha Marvel (Medford Lakes, N.J. / Caravel Academy) to begin the third quarter sent the Golden Rams on a 12-2 run that broke the game open.

West Chester led by double digits for the last 15:44 of gameplay. Sophomore guard Sarah Holweg (West Pittston, Pa. / Wyoming) drilled a three-pointer that fueled a 20-5 run to close out the contest.

The Golden Rams had their best shooting performance from beyond the arc this season on Wednesday, making 10-of-17 attempts (58.8 percent).

Freshman Leah Johnson (Columbus, N.J. / Notre Dame) and sophomore Tacari Talford (Robesonia, Pa. / Conrad Weiser) led West Chester with 13 points apiece. Senior Gabrielle Troisi (Norristown, Pa. / Pope John Paul II) had 10 points to go along with a game-high nine rebounds.

Johnson, who landed PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Week honors on January 13, recorded five steals for the third time in the last seven games. She has a team-best 243 points and 39 steals this season.

West Chester hits the road for its next game on February 5 to take on the PSAC East's first place team in Shippensburg University at 6 p.m.
