WEST CHESTER, Pa.- Coming off a 3-0 victory over Lock Haven on Friday, the West Chester women's volleyball team (19-5, 8-2 PSAC) returned to action in a tri-match with its first match of the day coming against PSAC rival Bloomsburg. West Chester and Bloomsburg battled throughout but it was the host Golden Rams who emerged with a 3-1 victory.
In the first set, West Chester jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead before Bloomsburg rallied to bring the set back within one with the score 7-6 in favor of West Chester. The two teams traded points but it was West Chester who held a 16-11 lead midway through the set. With this 16-11 lead in hand, West Chester won nine of the next 15 points to take the first set by a 25-17 final.
In the second set, Bloomsburg jumped out to an early 10-5 lead and held on to a slim lead until late in the set with the score sitting at 17-14 midway through the stanza. West Chester closed the set on an impressive 11-3 run to take the second set by a 25-20 final and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, West Chester and Bloomsburg traded points and runs through much of the early going as the set was tied at 17-17 near the midway point. Bloomsburg closed the set on a 8-5 run to take a 25-22 third set victory and force a fourth set.
West Chester and Bloomsburg traded points through the early going before West Chester pulled ahead (11-8) before extending its lead to 16-10. Bloomsburg countered with a 6-0 run to even the set at 16-16. The Golden Rams closed the match with a 9-5 run to take the fourth set 25-21 and give West Chester the 3-1 match victory.
Julia Vreeswyk (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) led the team in kills with 18 while
Maria Harding (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) was second on the squad with 14 kills.
Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton) led the way in both digs (23) and aces (6) while
Jamie Byrne (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) posted a team-best 53 assists.
West Chester will be back in action vs D'youville later this afternoon.
