FLEMINGTON, N.J. – Hittin' season came early as the West Chester Golden Rams' baseball team outscored the Mansfield Mounties 37-6 in a two-game sweep on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME ONE
- Mansfield led off game one by scoring two runs in the top of the first.
- In the bottom of the second, Luke Cantwell gave the Golden Rams the lead on a three-run home run.
- West Chester continued to rally in the bottom of the second, scoring nine runs in total, capped off by a Mike Ferrera grand slam.
- Mansfield responded in the top of the third, scoring two runs before adding an additional run in the top of the fourth. West Chester maintained a 9-4 lead after the top of the fourth.
- The Golden Rams retaliated in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs highlighted by an RBI-double from Drew Jarmuz.
- Joe Kaleck stole home in the bottom of the fifth on a double steal, increasing the Golden Rams' lead to 12-4.
- Zack Wright opened up scoring in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run home run. The Golden Rams continued to rally after the home run, scoring nine runs in the inning, securing the 21-5 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME TWO
- The Mounties got on the board early in game two, scoring their leadoff batter in the top of the first inning.
- West Chester dominated scoring for the rest of the game, however. Wright began the campaign by smacking a two-run home run in the bottom of the second, giving West Chester the 2-1 lead.
- The Golden Rams played a lot of small ball in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs while capitalizing on some defensive misplays by the Mounties.
- The long ball took over in the bottom of the fifth as Wright hit his third home run of the day (two-RBI) before Justin Horn hit a three-RBI double of his own. Ultimately, a solo home run from Hunter Hall closed out the day for the Golden Rams, who won game two by a 16-1 margin.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS | GAME ONE
- Cantwell and Wright each hit a three-run home run, combing for four runs scored and six RBI on the game.
- Ferrera's grand slam highlighted a three-run, five-RBI day for the transfer student.
- Nick Cataldi earned the win on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings while striking out four batters and allowing five runs.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS | GAME TWO
- Wright added two additional home runs to his line in game two, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI.
- Ferrera went 2-for-2, scoring three runs and knocking in two batters.
- Culver Hughes allowed one run on one hit in three innings of work, earning the win for the Golden Rams.
