J.R. Gifford (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) added seven RBI in game one, as West Chester University hammered Kutztown pitching with eight home runs in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) baseball doubleheader sweep Friday afternoon at Maple Zone Sports Complex.
West Chester (13-7, 13-7 PSAC East) moved into second place in the Eastern Division standings with the sweep. The Golden Rams scored a combined 39 runs and banged out a combined 36 hits, including 18 for extra bases against Kutztown (16-16, 10-16). The Golden Rams took game one, 26-3, before claiming game two, 13-1.
Kutztown's Gavin Moretski hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning of game one. And then the flood gates opened, and West Chester's hit parade began. The Golden Rams plated 10 runs in the bottom half of the first, knocking out Bears starter Trevor Leverington (1-3) after just two-thirds of an inning. The Golden Rams added one more in the second, four runs in the fourth, nine in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
GAME 1
- Zack Wright went 4-for-4 with four runs scored, three RBI, two stolen bases and a home run thrown in.
- J.R. Gifford went 3-for-3 with seven RBI. All three of his hits went for extra bases, including a pair of home runs.
- Hunter Hall (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford Area) went 2-for-4 with four runs scored and four RBI, including a home run.
- Keith Flaherty (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep), Dennis Pierce (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) and Justin Horn (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Dublin) also homered in the win.
- WCU starter Braeden Fausnaught (Danville, Pa./Danvile) threw five innings, yielding two runs [only one of which was earned] on just a pair of hits. He walked three and struck out eight.
GAME 2
- Zack Wright went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, three RBI, a stolen base and a triple thrown in.
- The top three hitters in West Chester's order went a combined 8-for-12 with 10 RBI and five runs scored.
- Nick D'Amore (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann Goretti) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI, including both a double and a triple.
- Justin Horn (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Dublin) homered again, finishing the nightcap 2-for-4 with four RBI.
- WCU starter Culver Hughes (Exton, Pa./East) pitched a complete game. He surrendered one run on four hits while walking one and striking out five.
West Chester and Kutztown finish up their four-game weekend series Saturday afternoon in Kutztown.
