WILMINGTON, DE – Four West Chester hitters finished in double figures as the Golden Rams survived a five-set thriller in a non-conference women's volleyball match inside the WU Athletic Complex Thursday evening.
West Chester (7-3) increased its win streak to four matches with the win. The Golden Rams topped Wilmington (5-7) by scores of 16-25, 25-11, 28-26, 14-25 and 16-14.
Julia Vreeswyk (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) and
Sarah Polacek (Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hilltop) each led West Chester with 14 kills. Vreeswyk was credited with three blocks as well.
Maria Harding (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) added 12 kills while
Olivia Rudjord (Fogelsville, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) contributed 11 kills.
Jamie Byrne (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) posted a double-double with 48 assists and 16 digs.
Sydney Heffner (Bath, PA/Northampton) led the Golden Rams with 34 digs, and
Ali Miller (Enola, PA/Cumberland Valley) registered 16.
Wilmington's Mandy Behiels finished off a kill in the fifth set that tied everything up at 14-apiece. It was the fifth such tie in the deciding set and completed a rally by the Wildcats that saw them erase a 13-10 deficit to get back into the set.
However, Vreeswyk's 14th kill in the match and a hitting error by Wilmington allowed West Chester to walk out of the gym victorious after more than two hours of a seesaw contest.
The Golden Rams have little time to rest as they open up conference play Friday evening at home against Millersville University at 7 p.m. inside Hollinger Field House.
