SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V.- Following a convincing 2-1 victory over Millersville to open PSAC play on Saturday afternoon, the West Chester men's soccer team took to the road on Wednesday afternoon to face another league foe in Shepherd. West Chester scored three first half goals including two in the span of 39 seconds to roll to the 4-1 victory over Shepherd and improve to 2-0-1 on the year and 2-0-0 in league play.
In a similar manner to the way the Golden Rams opened the scoring against Millersville,
Doug Goitia (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) broke through off an assist from
Josh Daniels in the 17
th minute to give the visiting Golden Rams an early 1-0 lead.
Kendall Walkes (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) followed this up with his first of two goals on the afternoon in the 21
st minute before scoring against just 39 seconds later off an assist from
Eric Greer (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) to give West Chester a comfortable 3-0 lead with just under 25 minutes to play in the opening half.
This effort ranks Walkes, 13
th in NCAA Division II men's soccer history for the fastest consecutive goals. This effort also places Walkes as the second fastest player in the last five years to score back-to-back goals trailing only Jackson Padilla of Northeastern State who scored a pair in 17 seconds during the 2017 season.
Shepherd managed to hold West Chester scoreless for the remainder of the opening half but in the 68
th minute, West Chester broke through again as
Tommy Bodenschatz (Royersford, Pa./Spring Ford) used an assist from
Gio Jimenez (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) to extend the Golden Rams lead to 4-0.
Shepherd countered in the 81
st minute with a goal of its own as Shamar Robinson converted on a PK opportunity, which trimmed the West Chester lead to 4-1, but this was as close as the host Rams would get as the Golden Rams cruised to the 4-1 victory.
West Chester ended the contest with a 13-6 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in shots on goal while also ending the contest with a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Daniel Good (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) got the start between the pipes for West Chester and made one save in his 45 minutes of work before exiting in favor of
Jake Langley (Villanova, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) who played the second half making three saves of his own while surrendering one goal as West Chester rolled to the victory.
West Chester will be back in action on Saturday evening at Shippensburg with that contest beginning at 5 p.m.
