West Chester Opens 2022 with Sweep of Yale Quad Meet

NEW HAVEN, CT.-
In its first competition since March 2020, the West Chester gymnastics team (3-0) returned to action in a Quad Meet at Yale on Sunday afternoon to open the 2022 season. West Chester had a number of strong performances on Sunday afternoon, ending the meet with a final score of 192.325 to earn victories over LIU (190.825), Yale (190.800), and Brown (188.700).

The Golden Rams 192.325 score marks the fourth time in the last five years that West Chester has scored above 190 on opening night and it is the second-highest score during this streak, trailing only the Golden Rams opening-night effort from the 2020 season.

"I am so proud of this team," opened head coach Barb Cordova. "They have all been through so much after a missing a season last year. They came out today with a great performance and an amazing start to the our season. Our primary goal today was to have fun and appreciate the fact that we get to do this again," explained Cordova. 

Jessica Meakim (Downingtown, Pa.) and Kiah Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa.) led West Chester on the vault, registering a 9.750 while Kiley Fred (Highland Mills, N.Y.) was next with a score of 9.725.

On the uneven bars, Jordan Coleman (Bowie, Md.) led West Chester with a score of 9.775 followed by Meakim and Samantha Kelly (Mullica Hill, N.J.) with scores of 9.725 and 9.675, respectively.

Natalie Marshall (Bolton, Ma.) led the way for the Golden Rams on the balance beam with a team-high score of 9.7 followed closely by Rose Fanara (Fredericksburg, Va.) with a score of 9.65, Meakim with a score of 9.625 and Caroline Cascadden (Ashburn, Va.) with a score of 9.55.

Meakim, who competed in all four events for West Chester on Sunday afternoon to register an All-Around score of 38.9, which resulted in a second-place finish in this event, logged her top-event finish of the day in the floor exercise with a score of 9.8 to finish second and pace the Golden Rams in this event. McKenna Kissinger (Chambersburg, Pa.)  and Lilly McFarland (Baltimore, Md.) also stood out for West Chester in this event, registering scores of 9.75, and 9.7 to help lead the Golden Rams to the opening-night victories.

West Chester will be back in action this Friday night at Towson in another Quad Meet, this time opposite Towson, West Virginia and William & Mary. The Golden Rams will make their return to the Sturzebecker Health Science Center on January 29th to face Ursinus in their first home meet of the 2022 season.
