Women’s Soccer Clinches PSAC East Title with 2-0 Victory Over Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV – The West Chester women's soccer team (14-0, 13-0) traveled to West Virginia for their second matchup of the season against Shepherd (5-7-4, 4-7-3) on Wednesday. Julia Raybold (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) and Faith Matter (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) scored for the Golden Rams to lead the team to 2-0 win that claimed their PSAC East title for the 2022 season.

The Golden Rams attacked early on in the match when Kaitlynn Haughey (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) took the first shot of the game in the sixth minute, followed by three other attempts, which led to the Golden Rams out-shooting Shepherd 4-0 in the first 15 minutes.

Raybold scored her fourth goal of the season and first goal of the match for West Chester as a header off an assist from Jordyn Dupes (Middletown, Pa./Middletown Area) in the 17th minute.

Not backing down for the remainder of the first half, the Golden Rams outshot Shepherd 6-1, putting Shepherd goalie, Alayna Burgamy, to work as she made three saves in the opening half to keep the score where it was.

Shepherd answered back in the start of the second half taking a shot on West Chester goalie, Hayley McGee (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) in the 48th minute.

With less than a minute left in the match, Matter extended the Golden Rams lead to 2-0, scoring her fifth goal of the season, which would land West Chester's victory.

West Chester out-shot Shepherd 9-3 in the second 45, forcing Burgamy to make four more saves upping her total to seven on the afternoon. McGee made four saves for West Chester in the match.

West Chester ended the match with a 20-4 lead in total shots and a 5-1 advantage in corners, en route to head coach Betty Ann Kempf-Townsley's seventh PSAC East title and the team's first since 2017.
