Pair of Golden Rams Selected in USFL Supplemental Draft

WEST CHESTER, PA - A pair of former Golden Rams were picked up in the USFL Supplemental Draft Thursday evening. Jarey Elder (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and Shane Griffin (Jenkintown, Pa./Abington), who each last played college football in 2019, were picked up in the draft.

Elder was selected by the New Orleans Breakers in the eighth round with the 63rd pick while Griffin was scooped up by the Michigan Panthers in the 10th round with the 78th pick overall. The USFL kicks off its first season since 1985 on Saturday, April 16. The former Golden Rams begin their season the following day on Sunday, April 17. The Panthers will take on the Houston Gamblers at 12 p.m. The game can be seen live on NBC. The Breakers will play the Philadelphia Stars at 4 p.m. on the USA Network.

All games will be played in Birmingham, Ala., for the inaugural season. The resurgence of the USFL includes eight teams which will play a 10-week schedule through the week of June 18-19 with a playoffs to follow.

The United States Football League was a professional major league which played its games from 1983-85 during the spring and summer months. Founded by David Dixon, a New Orleans art and antique dealer, the USFL announced its formation on May 11, 1982, at the 21 Club in New York City.The league announced that it would be made up of 12 teams in major markets across the country. Franchises would play in New York (the  Meadowlands, N.J.), Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, Tampa, Oakland, Denver, Washington, Philadelphia, Birmingham and San Diego (eventually switched to Phoenix).
