SHIPPENSBURG, PA – Shippensburg scored the eventual game-winning goal 14 seconds into the fourth quarter en route to a 3-2 victory over visiting West Chester in a pivotal Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) field hockey match at Robb Sports Complex.
West Chester (7-3, 3-1 PSAC) had tied the game at 2-apiece in the 37th minute on
Jasmine Miller's (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) second goal of the game. Miller gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with her 14th tally of the year six minutes into the contest. Her second of the game leveled the score against the second-ranked Raiders (9-2, 3-0) and also moved her past Newberry's Emma Westbrook for the lead in goals scored in all of Division II with 15. Miller's 1.44 goals per game also leads the nation.
In what was a very tightly contested match between two Top 5 programs, West Chester held a slim 10-8 advantage in penalty corners and Shippensburg held a slight 15-14 edge in shots. In fact, Shippensburg is the only team to outshoot West Chester in a field hockey game this fall. The Raiders have done it in both games that they have played the Golden Rams.
West Chester starting goalkeeper
Emerie Loftis (Glen Allen, Va./Trinity Episcopal) made three saves in the first half while her replacement,
Alina Buerger (Koenigs Wusterhausen, Brandenburg, Germany), made four stops in the second half.
Shippensburg's Lilly Cantabene scored a goal, including the game-winner, and added an assist. Tess Jedelo and Yasmin De Mayer had the other two markers for the Raiders.
West Chester returns home on Saturday for a contest against Frostburg State at Vonnie Gros Field at 1 p.m.
