Game Recap: Baseball |

No. 8/10 West Chester Tops Pitt-Johnstown, 6-1

GLENVILLE, WV - Joe Kaleck (Southampton, Pa./Neshaminy) hit a three-run home run and Ryan DeHaven (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) picked up his second win of the season as No. 8/10 West Chester downed Pitt-Johnstown, 6-1, in a non-league baseball contest at Sue Morris Complex in Glenville, WV.

West Chester (6-1) got two stellar pitching performances from DeHaven, who went the first five innings, and David Ferguson (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) who threw the final four frames to collect his first save of the year. DeHaven surrendered one run on three hits while striking out three. He did not walk a batter in his five innings of work. Ferguson threw four scoreless innings of relief while scattering five hits and striking out five.

Kaleck's three-run shot in the second inning posted West Chester to a 3-0 lead. Pitt-Johnstown got one run back in the third to make it a 3-1 game. However, the Golden Rams went right back on top by three in the top of the fourth when Profy was hit by a pitch with one out, and Kaleck followed with a double. Zack Miles (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) sacrificed Profy home to make it 4-1.

That's the way things stayed until the top of the ninth when the Golden Rams pushed a pair of runs across with two outs in the inning for insurance. J.R. Gifford (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Sean Szestowicki (Mount Royal, N.J./Kingsway Regional) hit back-to-back singles, before Sean Slowinski (Richboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood) walked to load the bases. John DeMucci (Swarthmore, Pa./Msgr. Bonner & Prendie) hit a two-run single to center for all the scoring West Chester would need.

Kaleck finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBI while Slowinski had three hits as well. Gifford was 2-for-4 in addition to sparking the two-out ninth inning rally.

West Chester will travel back to Cary, N.C. for the DII Baseball Challenge at the U.S. Baseball Training Complex next weekend. First up for the Golden Rams in that four-game weekend slate is Saint Anselm on Friday at 11:30 a.m.
