The Golden Rams (28-16) finished the regular season in third place in the PSAC Eastern Division standings. The Lakers (28-14) finished in second place in the PSAC Western Division standings. The winner will advance to the second round of the tournament and will play the winner of Millersville vs. Indiana (Pa.) on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

West Chester defeated Mercyhurst, 5-3, earlier this season at Monongalia County Ballpark at West Virginia University on Feb. 25. The Golden Rams dropped two games in a three-game series with Millersville two weeks ago. However, all three contests were decided by one run. West Chester and IUP have not meet this season.

The Golden Rams are making their 19th appearance overall in the PSAC Tournament and 11th straight. They are 32-26 (.561) in the conference tournament and have won the whole thing four times (1985, 2009, 2012, 2016).

West Chester is 3-4 against Mercyhurst in the tournament and 8-8 against them all-time since the Lakers joined the PSAC in 2008. It is a rematch of last year's first-round contest between these two schools, which was won by Mercyhurst, 5-2, at Jack Critchfield Park.
