Women's Volleyball Clipped by Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.-Following a hard-fought 3-1 loss at Shepherd on Friday night, the West Chester University women's volleyball team (8-9, 1-4) returned to action on Saturday afternoon at Shippensburg (8-9, 4-1) in another PSAC East clash. West Chester battled throughout the match and held a late lead in the third set but fell by a 3-0 (25-22, 25-10, 29-27) final.

West Chester battled throughout the first set and led into the early stages, holding an 11-8 lead before a 7-0 run by Shippensburg gave the host Raiders a 15-11 lead. West Chester battled back and pulled back to within a point (21-20) but the Raiders closed out the opening set on a 5-1 run to open the match with a 25-22 victory.

In the second set, Shippensburg jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, racing to a 25-10 victory to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match heading into the third set.

West Chester continued to battle in the third and held a 26-25 lead late but Shippensburg won four of the next five points to escape with a 29-27 third-set victory and a 3-0 win in the match.

Zoe Haines (York, Pa./York Suburban) led all players in kills with 11, while Emily Gardner posted 10 of her own to lead Shippensburg.

Lacie Brown (Cochranville, Pa./Avon Grove) led West Chester in assists with 33, while Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton) posted a team-high 16 digs and Amanda Redding (San Marino, Cal/) posted a match-high five blocks in the setback.

West Chester returns home next Friday to begin a homestand with a 6 p.m. matchup against East Stroudsburg before hosting Kutztown on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
