WEST CHESTER, Pa.- The West Chester University women's volleyball team (8-10, 1-5) returned home for its first PSAC East home game of the year against East Stroudsburg (13-4, 4-2) on Friday night in Hollinger Field House. West Chester battled throughout the match but fell to East Stroudsburg by a 3-0 (25-18, 25-6, 25-14) final to fall to 1-5 in league action.
West Chester and East Stroudsburg traded points throughout the early going, but a 12-6 run by the visiting Warriors gave the guests an early 15-9 lead and prompted a quick Golden Ram timeout. West Chester cut into the ESU lead out of the timeout, but the Warriors held a 21-14 lead into the late stages of the first set, prompting a second Golden Ram timeout. West Chester continued its comeback bid, cutting the deficit to 24-18 before a service error closed out the set with a 25-18 first-set victory.
East Stroudsburg raced out to an 11-2 lead to open the second set, which forced an early Golden Ram timeout. The timeout did little to halt the run as East Stroudsburg stretched its lead to 18-5 entering the late stages of the second set. The Warriors continued their dominant second-set performance, rolling to a 25-6 second-set victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
West Chester took a 3-1 lead to open the third set before ESU countered with a 9-1 run of its own to take a 10-4 lead early in the third set. West Chester battled back and cut the East Stroudsburg lead to 13-10 midway through the set, thanks in part to three kills and a block by
Zoe Haines (York, Pa./York Suburban) before the Warriors went on a 6-2 run to take a 19-12 lead late and force the second Golden Ram timeout of the set. The timeout halted the Warrior run with a quick service error, but East Stroudsburg wasted little time closing out the match with a 25-14 third-set victory.
Haines led West Chester in kills with 10 as the lone Golden Ram in double figures, while
Lacie Brown (Cochranville, Pa./Avon Grove) posted a team-best 25 assists in the setback.
Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton) posted a team-high 14 digs in the setback to slow the Warrior attack.
Kelly Crites led East Stroudsburg in kills with 14, while Anna Coulter finished with 12, and Hanna Garrison added 10 of her own in the victory. Taylor Haan kept the offense running well throughout the night, finishing with a match-best 40 assists and logging five digs. Leonor Chambel led the team in digs with 15 to go along with 14 from Kelly Crites, who also registered a pair of aces.
