GLENVILLE, WV - Joe Kaleck (Southampton, Pa./Neshaminy) went 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs, five runs scored and four RBI to lead West Chester to a 17-5 victory over Charleston (W.Va.) in the 2024 season opener Friday afternoon at Kenny Greenlief Field.
Both Kaleck and
Avery Spencer (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove) nearly hit for the cycle. Between the two, they finished the day 7-for-11 with three home runs, two doubles and 10 RBI. Kaleck was a triple shy while Spencer was a double shy of the cycle. Charleston (3-2) stayed with the Golden Rams through six innings, trailing 8-4 heading into the seventh. However, Spencer's grand slam in the seventh was the critical blow. West Chester scored 17 runs on 18 hits and made one error. Charleston scored five runs on nine hits and made one error.
Golden Rams' starting pitcher,
Julian Costa (Mantua, N.J./Clearview) threw five strong innings to earn the win on the hill. He allowed four runs, three of them earned, on five hits. He walked three and struck out three.
Nick Noga (Avondale, Pa./Avon Grove) pitched three innings in relief, and
Ben Jones (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) finished up the ninth for West Chester.
John DeMucci (Swarthmore, Pa./Msgr. Bonner & Prendergast) went 2-for-5 with a RBI and pair of runs scored.
Sean Szestowicki (Mt. Royal, N.J./Kingsway Regional),
Darius Troche (Shillington, Pa./Gov. Mifflin) and
Anthony Boccio (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) each had two hits and scored two runs.
West Chester returns to Greenlief Field Saturday night at 6 p.m. for a game against D'Youville.
