LOCK HAVEN, PA –
Anthony Boccio (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) went a combined 4-for-7 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI to lead West Chester to a doubleheader sweep over Lock Haven at Watkins Field Friday afternoon.
The sweep comes at an opportune time for West Chester (12-5-1, 5-5-0 PSAC East) and pulls them back to .500 in the conference standings, after halting a five-game losing streak. Lock Haven (6-15, 3-7) has dropped its last four, including three PSAC tilts.
The Golden Rams scored in bunches in their final at bats in both games Friday. A six-spot in the top of the sixth inning of game two put a one-run ballgame out of reach. Following the bottom of the sixth, the game was called due to darkness giving the purple & gold a 10-3 victory. A four-run seventh in the opener pushed the Golden Rams' one-run lead in that contest to five for a 9-4 win.
Zack Miles (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) and
John DeMucci (Swarthmore, Pa./Msgr. Bonner & Prendie) provided the power with run-scoring doubles.
Evan Profy (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman), Boccio and
Avery Spencer (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove) had RBI singles. Profy scored on a wild pitch. Spencer finished game two 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Profy knocked in three runs and had a pair of hits. Miles and Boccio both went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Four pitchers handled the workload on the mound, combining to allow three runs, two of those earned, on four hits and striking out seven. They walked three.
Kyle Lazer (Havertown, Pa./Msgr. Bonner & Prendie) picked up the win to even his record at 1-1. He pitched the fourth and fifth innings, striking out three.
In the opener, West Chester followed it's season-long recipe of jumping out in front early by scoring three runs in the first and adding another in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Lock Haven battle back to tie things up at 4-apiece with three in the third and one more in the fifth. However, West Chester secured the lead again with a run in the sixth, and then put the contest away with a four-run seventh.
Joe Sperone (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) improved to 3-1 on the mound. He went five innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits. He walked five and struck out five.
Sean Szestowicki (Mount Royal, N.J./Kingsway Regional) and
Zack Miles (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn), the eight-nine hitters in the order, went a combined 4-for-6 with a pair of RBI and three runs scored. The top five hitters in the order had five hits while six through nine collected seven hits.
Drew Simpson (Hockessin, Del./Delaware Military) went 2-for-4 with a RBI. Boccio also went 2-for-4.
West Chester returns home Monday to finish the four-game series with Lock Haven. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Serpico Stadium.
